Lodge Sarawak No. 1452 SC was consecrated on Thursday 25th January 1951 in Kuching by the then RWDGM of the DGLME Brother H C Faxon assisted by RW Brother Baldwyn Lowick, the RWDGM of the DGL of the Eastern Archipelago and W Brother Edward G Holiday who succeeded RW Brother Baldwyn Lowick as RW DGM of the DGL of the Eastern Archipelago.

Brother Robert Yorke Hedges, then the Chief Justice of Sarawak, was installed as the Founding Master and Brother H M Cockle as WSW and Brother L D Kennedy as the WJW and Brother Matheson, who did a major share of the work as the Lodge Secretary in getting Lodge Sarawak to be consecrated. Altogether 29 brethren attended the Installation, not bad considering it was on a Thursday in Sarawak in 1951. The Consecration team left the next day for Kota Kinabalu to consecrate Lodge Kinabalu No. 7047 EC making Lodge Sarawak the oldest existing masonic lodge in Borneo.

The Lodge had 69 Founding Members and was sponsored by Lodge St Andrew No. 1437 SC in Singapore. It is interesting to note that one of the founding members Brother Richard Saville Sagar of Lodge Elliot No. 3557 EC retired back to the United States and was in correspondence with Brother Chan Tiang Ho until his passing and he was amazed that Lodge Sarawak has stood the test of time and is doing so well.

We have a photo of the Consecration proudly hanging on the wall at the entrance to our Temple.

The membership at the time as was to be expected comprising wholly of expatriate brethren. It was only in 1953 when the first Asian Brother Law Cheng Phang was initiated. Brother E Bomphrey was the first initiate to be installed as RWM in 1959 while Brother Yim Khai Sun was the first Asian RWM of the Lodge installed in 1961.

Our Lodge met from the early days in our own building built (to our understanding) at the cost of four thousand dollars. It was also used by two English teachers to teach little children of the expatriate community. This little group later evolved into Lodge School, which is now one of the premier international schools in Kuching.

As the years rolled by, more and more expatriate brethren left for home and more and more local brethren took over the helm of running the Lodge. We were extremely lucky to have among us Brother Brian Crane and other senior brothers who worked tirelessly to ensure that the Lodge continued to flourish.

In the 1990s, we realised that our land lease for the Lodge premises was running out and we needed to find new premises to continue to operate. Through the hard work of many brethren, we managed to acquire a piece of land and build a new lodge with the financial help of many brethren of the Lodge and of the District.

The Lodge has continued to grow - we now have experienced senior brethren, up and coming brethren, and a group of young brethren. This should ensure Lodge Sarawak will continue to progress and grow from strength to strength and remain as one of the premier lodges of the District.
