Sometime, probably in 1956, it was said that the RWDGM of the District Grand Lodge of the Middle East, Bro. John Henry Mason Summers, planted a seed in the mind of Bro. J. L. Manson, that, in view of the large community of Scots in the Ipoh area, there was felt a need for a new lodge under the Scottish Constitution.

Subsequently, a meeting was arranged and all present agreed to the formation of a new Scottish lodge. The name ‘Angus’ was chosen since many prominent masons in and around Ipoh originally came from the county of Angus or its vicinity including Bro. J. H. M. Summers himself. Bro. Fletcher P. McHoul, who was then a Past Master of Kinta Lodge, was elected as the Founder Master. Twenty-six of the Founder Members were Scottish Freemasons while rest were from the English, Irish and other Constitutions. The ‘Ogilvy’ working tartan was chosen as the lodge’s tartan for its regalia and is from the family and clan tartan of the ‘Earl of Airley’, the Laird of the county of Angus. Apparently, the working tartan was chosen instead of the dress tartan, because the use of the Angus ‘working’ tartan did not require the chieftain’s permission.

The lodge’s emblem was the Scottish ‘thistle’ representing friendship. In the centre is a sprig of ‘hawthorn’ flowers which grows profusely in Scotland meaning ‘growth’ with respect to the lodge. It was decided to use the Standard Ritual because it was the most straight forward and easily available.

Lodge Angus No.1529 S.C. was consecrated on Saturday 13th April 1957 at the Kinta Masonic Temple, in Ipoh with Bro F. P. McHoul as its Founding Master. The Consecrating officer was none other than Bro. J. H. M. Summers. The lodge experienced some lean times but persevered, celebrating its golden jubilee in a grand manner in 2007.
